Pegram community holds prayer circle for 9-year-old boy in critical condition

Nearly 50 community members gathered in the baseball field at Pegram Park on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 20 to pray over 9-year-old Alec George and his family.

On Dec. 12, the George family including Alec, his mother Melissa and his older brother Colin was in a single vehicle crash while taking Alec to school.

"The vehicle veered off the road, hit a culvert before landing nose first in the ditch on the other side of a driveway," Alec's mother wrote. "Alec wasn't wearing a seatbelt."

"Alec had surgery to remove the left side of his skull to help relieve pressure," Melissa's Dec. 17 update read. "As the days have gone [on], his brain kept swelling with no additional surgery possible. The only way for his brain to go was down, which means pushing on the spinal cord and possibly resulting in being brain dead."

She added, "The left side of his brain and face sustained the impact and damage. There will be many months of surgeries and rehab."

Alec and his brother are both members of the sports community in Pegram and Kingston Springs, including the South Cheatham Little League and the South Cheatham Indians.

Misty Hedgepath led the prayer for the George family on Dec. 20 at Pegram Park.

"We pray for Alec, Lord, asking and wanting a miracle for a full recovery for him," Hedgepath said. "God, we know that a full recovery is only possible through you. We know you are able, our prayers are that you are willing."

Melissa has been posting daily updates on Alec's progress on CaringBridge. The Nashville Youth Hockey League, which Alec and Colin are both members of, started a GoFundMe seeking $50,000 for Alec's medical expenses. They raised more than half of their goal by Dec. 27 at $26,220.

The families at the vigil also prayed over 3-year-old Franklin Ross the son of Kristy Ross, a second grade teacher at Pegram Elementary School. Franklin was born with Porphyria – a rare genetic order that causes allergic reactions to the sun. He underwent a bone marrow transplant in July, and has since been in and out of the hospital due to infections.

The toddler has been at Vanderbilt since Dec. 11 this cold and flu season with RSV and pneumonia. He has undergone two open-heart surgeries since being admitted earlier this month.

A GoFundMe for Franklin was started by Pegram Elementary parents. They are seeking to raise $10,000 for the Ross family, and have thus far raised over $5,000.
