Obituary: W.J. Hall of Craggie Hope

W.J. Hall, age 88 of Craggie Hope, passed away on March 24 in his home surrounded by family. He was born on April 7, 1936, in Nashville to the late Willie Hall and Martha Jane Baggerly.

W.J. was married for over 69 years to the love of his life, Evie Lanell Tutor Hall. He worked for many years as the County Court Clerk in Cheatham County. Hall was a longtime faithful member of the Craggie Hope United Methodist Church.

“He was a tremendous part of our church,” former Craggie Hope United Methodist Church Rev. Dale Mills told the Gazette. “He was always there. On Sunday morning, he greeted everyone as they came through the door.”

“He was a worship leader, and so his big welcome to church was a real loud, ‘Good morning,’” Mills said. “He made everyone feel welcome.”

Hall became a member of the Craggie Hope United Methodist Church nearly seven decades ago when he married Evie Lanell at a young age. Mills, who was the church leader from 2015 to 2021, said the congregation boasts around 30 members.

“[WJ] was one of the most devoted Christian men that I have known,” Mills recalled. “[He] just was one of those that was always there and very dependable and an amazing churchman.”

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at the Craggie Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Mills and Rev. Valarie James officiating. Interment will follow in the Young Cemetery. Visitation with the family will take place on Friday, April 11, from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Home, and on Saturday from noon until the time of service at the church.

For those desiring, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.

In addition to his parents, Hall was preceded in death by his brothers: Perry Wendell Hall and Neil Hall; and his granddaughter: Brianna Paige Hall.
